As the visual art professional development (PD) providers, we share our experience developing visual art workshops for 20 STEM teachers seeking to integrate visual art programming into their curriculum. Georgia State University (GSU) collaborated with Drew Charter School (a STEAM-certified K‒12 charter school in Atlanta), the Georgia Institute of Technology, and Decatur Makers (a local makerspace initiative) on a grant-funded project to develop STEAM PD workshops for 20 K‒8 STEM teachers. These workshops centered on the content and pedagogy for integrating visual art into STEM or other subjects. The workshops aimed to equip non-art teachers with simple strategies like art appreciation, art vocabularies, object-based teaching and learning, and hands-on art activities. We found both skill-based and concept-based components essential and helpful for workshop participants because they can quickly adopt the newly acquired skills and knowledge into their teaching practices. Most importantly, teachers’ positive attitudes toward art integration are key for schools that promote STEAM curriculum. At the end of the chapter, we share our recommendations for teacher PD providers and K‒12 schools that implement transdisciplinary STEAM curricula.
