Abstract

Naval warfare in the reigns of Philip II and Alexander was unique in that both kings led ships into battle only rarely. In contrast with their land warfare, their naval strategy, tactics and operations were often more reactive than proactive. The chapter examines the evidence for Philip’s maritime activities, suggests its limitations, and offers a reassessment of the view that his Macedonian sea power was substantial and largely competent. Alexander made greater use of his navy than his father but tended to subject it to the needs of his land campaigns. The chapter examines Alexander’s responses to the Persian naval threat to Macedonian hegemony in the Aegean and Greece, and the naval aspects of his sieges of Miletus and Tyre.
