This article argues that the nostalgia of the country house in seventeenth-and eighteenth-century English and Irish Literature is fundamentally utopian. Exploring the different and ambivalent manifestations of country house nostalgia of the period, the author argues that nostalgia and utopian desire are dialectially related.
