Breast milk is essential for neonatal development. The presence of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in breast milk has been shown in earlier studies. VEGF is a key mediator and plays a pivotal role in normal angiogenesis. Recently, it has been determined that soluble vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 (sVEGFR-1) is also present in human breast milk. Furthermore, considerable evidence has indicated that VEGF also has non-angiogenic functions. In this chapter, the focus is on the relationship between VEGF and sVEGFR-1 beyond its familiar biology, and potential angiogenic and non-angiogenic implications due to the presence of both in the milk.
