The authors have developed a mobile terrestrial laser scanner based on a 2D light detection and ranging sensor to model fruit tree crop canopies. The work presented deals with the definition of a procedure to create and extract useful information from 3D point clouds. Canopy volume measurements were obtained from an olive orchard with different methods and were compared with reference data. Global results show no significant differences between the various canopy volume estimations. However, in some development stages through the season, some discrepancies were found. The system developed could be a good tool to model orchards and their spatial variability.
