In the mid 1950s, Hans Richter was living in New York City and teaching at the City College. A new independent American cinema was emerging then and many of the young people, enthusiastic to discover new models for cinematic production, looked to Richter as a predecessor and mentor. So it was that Jonas Mekas asked Richter for a contribution to the first issue of the film magazine he had founded, Film Culture, that soon became the unofficial house organ of the New American Cinema movement. Richter’s essay, ‘The Film as an Original Art Form’ (1955) was a reflection on his accomplishments during the early years of Absolute Film.
