Three Serbian women intellectuals - Milica Stojadinović Srpkinja, Draga Dimitrijević Dejanović and Milica Miletić Tomić - are presented in this chapter. Although their lives were different, all three were very much aware of their nationality, considering it a decisive part of their identities: Milica Stojadinović made it the subject of her patriotic poetry, it permeated Draga Dejanović’s writings, and it was the main motif of Milica Tomić’s political efforts. Their lives and works represent the evolution of independent thinking and acting of Serbian women - from the wish of Milica Stojadinović to work as a woman of letters exclusively, to the feminist awareness of Draga Dejanović, all the way to the clearly defined political struggles of Milica Tomić.
