The development of interests and perceived competencies during the periods of childhood and adolescence is an emerging area within vocational psychology. Issues in the parallel assessment of broad-band Holland (RIASEC) interests and perceived competencies for children and adolescents are briefly discussed from cross-sectional and longitudinal perspectives. This is followed by presentation of key research findings and applications of these findings across the major schooling sets of elementary, middle, and high school.
