This chapter provides an overview of occupational and educational aspirations and the complementary notions of occupational and educational expectations. The constructs, aspirations and expectations, are defined and applied to explanations of their development, stability, and measurement. Theories used to explain the development and function of aspirations in career development and educational/occupational attainment are presented. Finally, various influences on aspirations development and attainment—e.g., gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, psychological variables, family background, and schoolbased experiences—are examined and discussed.
