The development of work values and behaviours is dynamically linked over time. Career development is indicated by increased harmony within the value system and between this system and other aspects of the person living in an array of contexts. Research spanning several disciplines and at least the past decade supports the proposed developmental systems model of work values, which includes conceptual and propositional elements. Value system harmony appears to be achieved and maintained via discrepancy reduction and cohesion patterns of change reflecting one underlying mechanism and their increasing action and influence over behaviour is reflective of value system development. Work rewards and values appear to be dynamically engaged with one another during the adolescent period and into adulthood, but rewards seem to have a greater influence over values than the reverse. Furthermore, research suggests that discrepancy reduction and cohesion interact to decrease discrepancies and increase cohesion over time across the high school years.
