The construct of career maturity is a key component of the developmental theory of Donald Super, particular with respect to adolescent career development. Despite widespread criticism as to its limitation as an explanatory variable in adolescent career behaviour, it remains widely used in empirical work. In this chapter, we review the current empirical work on career maturity and then discuss current theorising about career maturity and its reconceptualisation towards career adaptability. Issues with respect to research and practice raised by the new approaches are then addressed.
