The present chapter aims at an assessment of music for the dead as a part of funeral culture in the Southern Netherlands during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Focusing on the case of Antwerp, the function of funeral music and the evolving musical practices in funerals will be investigated. A second layer deals with the local production of music for the deceased, including the music written by composers working in Brabant and Flanders and the works available via music editions printed in this region. Finally, the repertoire local churches had at their disposal will be mapped. Combing these aspects to sketch the evolving demand for funeral music will offer new insights concerning the repertoire. Was funeral music subject to changing fashions, and, if so, was funeral music fashionable?
