The way in which cultural output attempts to deal with the issue of loss and the way in which the film musical as a specific cultural device allows for the viewer to emote are here considered. By reflecting on how certain film musicals attempt to unfold the issues surrounding death and dying, and responding to them using parataxic writing, the need to perform pain is identified. This performance of pain is then undertaken as a way to work through and deal with grief and loss.
