Much confusion reigns in our understanding of the Old and Middle Egyptian verb. What should Egyptology beginners make of it all? The main cause of the confusion is that hieroglyphic writing does not represent the verbal system fully. The sḏm.f-formation is affected the most. Much clarity could be added to the discussion if as many specialists as possible devoted to the research of the Egyptian verbal system committed themselves to a specific number of verb forms, laying their cards on the table as it were. This paper contains such a commitment regarding the number of “typical” Middle Egyptian sḏm.f-forms, namely nine. Who else will take up this challenge?
