Starting from a general concept of ‘religion’ that defines religion as a system comprising three domains of cultural activity, cult, theology and morality, the article aims to highlight the specifities of Egyptian religion: the importance of ‘ritual power’ (for which the Egyptian language has two terms usually translated as ‘magic’), the unusually elaborated concepts of ‘theology’ that gradually evolve during the New Kingdom, and the process of ‘sacralization’ that brings even the originally rather ‘secular’ domain of morality into closer affiliation with religion.
