The German Lutheran Theologian Trutz Rendtorff shapes a concept of an ethical theology as a way to deal with the pluralism in ethics. Ethics is defined as the “theory of the conduct of human life.” It articulates the meaning of the “ethical reality of life” in which human beings participate as a structure with three moments: (i) the life given, (ii) the gift of living and (iii) the reflexivity in order to conceptualize mediations, forms of life for effective coping with practical ethical questions. Theology in this regard is a hermeneutics of this structure, as a religious interpretative pattern. In this article, we compare this ethical approach of conducting aware human life with Michel Henry’s immanent ethos of life built upon a radical phenomenology of life, describing life as essentially affectivity.
