Abstract

This article describes the process of grammaticalization from a verb to a modal particle undergone by ὤφελον. The account explains the identification in ancient grammars of ὤφελον as a verb, a particle, or both, and offers new insights into the way tense can develop into mood (counterfactuality) with illocutionary force (desiderative).
