This paper seeks to identify the nature of a constitution called ‘imamic’ by al-Fārābī in one of his lost works, according to Ibn Bājja and Ibn Rushd. It argues that this constitution was simply the virtuous regime under a different name. Ibn Rushd, who identifies is it in somewhat puzzling terms, must have worked with a corrupt version of al-Fārābī’s passage. Already Todros Todrosi, who translated Ibn Rushd into Hebrew in the fourteenth century, tried to emend it. What follows is another attempt at the same.
