Flann O’Brien is generally regarded as a rather garrulous writer, whose darkly comic and polyphonic works are full of chatter and noise. But throughout his fiction this strategic verbosity often masks a deep desire for silence, as well as a profound fear of it. This chapter will focus on the complex endings of O’Brien’s major works, and suggest the various ways in which silence is a central concern, both formally and thematically.
