The Importance of Marine Science in Sustainable Fisheries: The Role of the 1995 un Fish Stocks Agreement

In: Legal Order in the World's Oceans

The 1995 un Fish Stocks Agreement (unfsa) provided a major impetus for expanding marine scientific research for fisheries management. In force since 2001, the agreement requires states to implement a precautionary approach and an ecosystem approach to fisheries, in order to implement the fisheries provisions of the 1982 un Law of the Sea Convention. The relevant provisions of the unfsa are presented and their development and implementation is discussed with reference to Norwegian experiences.
