Alalaḫ/Mukiš under Hittite Rule and Thereafter

In: Overturning Certainties in Near Eastern Archaeology

This paper discusses the history of Alalaḫ/Mukiš as it relates to Hittite sovereignty in Syria during the Late Bronze Age. Special attention is given to the political situation as illuminated through analysis of sources from Tell Atchana, Hattuša, Ugarit, Qadeš, and Tell Afis. It proceeds to examine the history of the region into the first millennium bc after the destructions wrought by the Sea Peoples and others. This discussion is then related to the recent finds from Tell Tayinat, focusing on Palistin, the kingdom of King Taita.
