This chapter applies the term “cultural saint” to the Catalan poet Jacint Verdaguer, according to the model established by Marijan Dović and Jon Karl Helgason. By examining each of the model’s categories, and using the vita-cultus-effectus framework, it shows that the national poet (regarded by Catalans as a hero of the language and the country) matches the concept. The text also speculates on the extent to which “cultural saints” still play a representative and revitalizing role even many years after they have died in countries with an ongoing national process.
