Abstract

Through a review of a large number of logbooks and notarial acts from the State Archives of Genoa, the author examines the role of Famagusta in the Genoese maritime network between the 14th and 15th centuries. The focus is on three aspects: the route to Famagusta in the broader context of the Genoese routes in the eastern Mediterranean, Famagusta’s ability to provide crews for the Genoese galleys and the capability of Famagusta’s port to harbor Genoese ships. The documentation shows the difficult political situation in the area, referring both to commercial travel and the carrying of arms and armed forces from Genoa to the island.
