Abstract
Contrary to other European countries, the contemporary Muslim presence in Portugal has not raised major tensions among the population, nor has it attracted the attention of the media on a regular basis, or been put at the top of the political and research agenda. This chapter aims to analyse this relative silence. First, we analyse some of the recent historic and political factors that may have contributed to this impression of a relative public silence concerning the local Muslim communities in Portugal. Then, we analyse individual attitudes toward Muslims in Portugal and compare them to other European countries. Portuguese data suggest a discrepancy between attitudes specifically toward the Muslim community and attitudes toward Muslims and Islam as more abstract categories. The relationship between these individual attitudes and the silence surrounding Muslims in Portugal is discussed.
