Abstract

Can Christianity can nurture civic virtue and sentiments of citizenship among its adherents, even under the rule of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)? Drawing on in-person interviews, primary documents, news reports, and scholarly studies, the chapter uncovers variations related to geographic location, temporal changes in government policies and attitudes, church registration status, and Christian beliefs and practices. In general, post-Mao CCP leaders have avoided putting the political regime at existential odds with Christian believers. However, in recent years CCP policies have made it difficult for Christians to be good citizens, exhibit civic virtue, and be true to their faith.
