The Vision of the Other

In: Cosmopatriots

Abstract

This essay provides concrete examples of how Chinese artists Cai Guoqiang and Yung Hochang, who often participate in international exhibitions, have to deal with and are influenced by the discourses of post-colonialism, anti-orientalism and nationalism as used by the art critics in their home country. This essay sums up some of the dominant ideological narratives that shape the intersections between patriotism and cosmopolitanism. The artists have acquired different identity modes to deal with demands and expectations inside and outside China, thereby perpetually navigating between articulations of Chineseness and its artistic Others.
