This chapter briefly recounts the elements of a categorical apology articulated in my I Was Wrong: The Meanings of Apologies in order to consider two difficulties facing collective apologies such as those offered by nations and corporations. While collective apologies can convey profound meaning, I argue that problems related to standing and consensus, in addition to other challenges, often seriously undermine the value of collective apologies.
