The Total Mobility of the Dime Novel Detective

In: Perspectives on Mobility

The text seeks to examine the relation between writing, travel and the figure of the detective. The first part looks back at the origins of narrative prose writing in England and claims that the rise of the novel is closely entangled with improvements in transportation. In the second part, a similar connection is found between the establishment of the railway system in the USA and the rise of the dime novel. Finally, the figure of the detective becomes a prosopopoeia for the total mobility of the dime novel.
