Abstract

On the basis of the evidence of the Pichvnari Greek Necropolis of the 5th century BC, the present publication offers a new dating of the late period Chian amphoras with swollen necks. It is obvious that the manufacture of this kind of amphoras ceased in the mid-5th century BC. From the second quarter of the 5th century BC a new variety of pottery emerged, which can be regarded as a transitional form between Chian amphoras with swollen necks and amphoras with straight necks.
