In 2002, the Diaspora Engagement Affairs General Directorate was established within the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the objective to liaise with the Ethiopian Diaspora and to encourage its investment in the country. In addition, the new legal status of “Foreigner of Ethiopian Origins” facilitated the acquisition of residence and investment permits and targeted in particular the Ethio-American diaspora.


In 2014, Ethiopia hosted over 630,000 refugees, overtaking Kenya as Africa’s biggest refugee-hosting country. See UNHCR,, accessed 20 June, 2015.
