This article explores the political aspects of Islamic parties in Jombang, East Java. The issue came about during the controversy arising out of the defection of the leader of the Tarekat Qadiriyah Wa Naqsyabandiyah, an Islamic order, prior to the 1977 general election. It raised questions as to the political orientation of Islamic groups in Indonesia during the 1970s and 1980s.
