Abstract

Based on theoretical consideration one can except that among the many variables one can measure in a behavior pattern those variables which are most stereotyped should be most useful to characterize a particular pattern. In order to explore the utility of this assumption, the relative variability of 204 different feature variables of the wet-my-lips call of the male migratory quail (Coturnix coturnix coturnix L.) was calculated and analyzed. The results show that the most stereotyped features (C.V. < 0.015) are those which constitute the rhythm of this call.
