Abstract

The reference to Israel in the Merneptah stele plays a pivotal role in the debate on Israel's emergence in Late Bronze-Iron Age Palestine. Most scholars ignore 'the plain sense of the text' which suggests that Israel has been wiped out. Recent research on ethnicity undermines the essentialist notion that there is a direct connection between Merneptah's 'Israel' and later entities of the same name. The article explores the implications of accepting the claim of Merneptah's scribes that 'Israel' had been destroyed
