Abstract

In this introduction we provide a brief overview over the various periods of the sociological engagement with communism. We argue that the relationship has often been an uneasy, in some cases even a highly questionable one. However, on occasion the discipline also produced some decent research on the subject of communism. We conclude that it is still a long way to a proper sociology of communism worthy of the name.
