1. Naturally, in its quest for constructive alternatives the opposition might have utilized Western concepts in various situations; but even if so, the opposition was not created by these ideas; rather, it employed them as a technique.

2. I prefer to call such a medieval type of authoritarian political organization "Ab- solutism." 3. By this I mean an essentially new, unprecedented authoritarian type of medieval political organization, different both from Western Absolutism and Oriental Despotism.

4. I say "pseudo-absolutism" because the basic parameters of the autocratic system were unassaibable. A "hard" autocratic regime would simply be superseded by a rela- tively "soft" one. By the way, one may call the despotic phase in the Russian autocratic cycle "pseudo-despotism" because it differs from traditional "Oriental despotism." In my book I call it "Twilight of the Autocracy." In greater length I have discussed my definitions of these terms in my book The New Russian Right (Institute of International Studies, University of California, Berkeley, 1978).

5. With reference to the USSR today I have sought to describe this road in a mono- graph, Detente after Brezhnev (Institute of International Studies, University of Califor- nia, Berkeley, 1977).
