In Heinrich Kaufringer’s Die Rache des Ehemanns, an underlying pattern, set up at the beginning of the text, undergoes four variations. Speech and the tongue are central elements in the tale. Language serves as an instrument for manipulation. As the final tale-within-a-tale shows, recipients scarcely have a chance to realise that they are being manipulated by language and signs. Metanarrative aspects help to make Kaufringer’s narrative style appear no less artistic than that of Bocaccio.
