Abstract

For the past quarter of a century, in Belgium like all over Europe, the police have often been put into question. This has transformed the issue of police reform into a political debate which has brought about the wish to develop useable knowledge regarding the police force, thanks namely to ad hoc evaluation procedures used to help strengthen police legitimacy. The present article examines the evolution of the equilibrium between different means of evaluating the police in Belgium, before and since the reform of the police, launched by an act of law in 1998.
