12. Tarabukin gave his paper entitled 'Osnovy teorii zhivopisi" on February 13, 1929 at a meeting of the Theory Subsection of RAKhN. It reflected Tarabukin's permanent interest in the intrinsic components of painting which he first discussed monographicaily in his Opyt teorii zhivopisi in 1916 (published in 1923) and his article, 'Osnovnye elementy zhivopisi," Gorn (M), No. 2 (1922), pp. 114-21. His ideas in the RAKhN lecture stimulated a lively de- bate in which Dmitrii Nedovich, Sergei Skriabin, P. V. Venetsian, Nikolai Zhinkin, and others took an active part and some of their responses are included here after the main text. This translation is made from the typescript in RGALI, f. 941, op. 3, ed. khr. 131, II. 24-29.
