Abstract

This paper is an attempt to trace the origin of an interesting Kurdish lexeme with a high occurrence frequency, which is usually perceived by the neighbouring Armenians as sort of a shibboleth for characterising the Kurds. The author rejects the possible connections of this lexeme with the Oriental Caucasian *läg-"man, slave".
