Seventy-two species of terrestrial isopods are known from Syria, Lebanon, Israel, the Palestinian Authority, and Jordan. The bulk of the Oniscidean fauna consists of circum-Mediterranean genera. Additionally, there are elements from the Euxinian, the Irano—Turanian, the Saharo—Arabian, and the Sudanian regions. For the genus Armadillo, the region itself has become a radiation center. A comparison with Greece in the northern Mediterranean shows lower species densities in the central Near East due to the high percentage of desert biotopes with low productivity, and a smaller rate of endemism due to a more uniform geomorphology.
