Belgium is a state that is confronted within its border with different groups that have their own language profile. The country appears to have been run as a veritable laboratory for testing several of the possible models and a very complicated pacificatory system has arisen. This summary deals with the origins and the development of three relevant "models": the homogeneous territorial areas, the bilingual capital area and the protected minorities in the boroughs along the language borders.
