Abstract

Some important characters in Heterothops Stephens are treated: density of punctuation, chaetotaxy of the head and structure of aedeagus. Controversial taxa are critically compared which gives the following results: H. niger Kraatz is a subspecies of praevius Erichson, H. brunnipennis auct. from Sweden is not identical with H. brunnipennis Kiesenwetter but with H. minutus Wollaston from Madeira. Lectotypes are designated for H. brunnipennis and H. minutus. Macaronesian endemics are H. canariensis n.sp. (Canary Is.) and H. wollastoni n.sp. (Cape Verde Is.). Beside the species already mentioned also binotatus Gravenhorst, quadripunctulus Gravenhorst and dissimilis Gravenhorst are treated. All nine species are keyed.
