Two new chironomid species from the Amazon area, Stempellina cururui sp.n. and S. tarumai sp.n., are described. The species form a well defined species-group within the genus. S. tarumai is described in the larval, pupal and imaginal stage. S. cururui is only known in the imaginal stage. This paper presents the tirst record of the genus Stempellina Thienemann & Bause from the Neotropical region. The reason for the change of authorship for the genus is mentioned. The ecology of the species is poorly known since most of the available material has been collected at light or as surface drift on rivers.
