Abstract

The current concept of Ilybius angustior (Gyllenhal) in Europe and North America has involved two species. I. picipes (Kirby) previously a junior synonym of I. angustior is available for the other species. Lectotypes are designated for both species. The two species are habitually very simitar but show useful diagnostic characters in the genitalia of both sexes. Also, the upper surface of I. picipes is dull, not aeneous as in most specimens of I. angustior. Both species have a holartic distribution. I. picipes is here recorded from Finland, Sweden, Norway and Canada. Distribution maps for Sweden are given for both species.
