Abstract

The generic diagnosis of Guttipelopia Fittkau is revised and expanded with particular emphasis given to the larval cephalic setae and Iabral sensilla, which are homologized to conform with the terms applied to the other chironomid subfamilies. A historical account is given to the nomenclatural changes for G. guttipennis, from van der Wulp (1861) to the present and a male imago is designated as the Iectotype for the species. The conspecificity of Nearctic Guttipelopia multipunctata (Curran) and Palaearctic G. guttipennis (v. d. Wulp) is confirmed and G. currani Beck & Beck is considered a new junior subjective synonym of the latter species. Redescriptions of larva, pupa, and imagines of both sexes are given for G. guttipennis and G. rosenbergi Bilyj with a key to their separation. Information is also provided on their geographic distributions, larval habitats and phenologies.
