Abstract

A new species of Helochares of the lividus group, H. (s.str.) lividoides sp.n., is described from Israel. Nine other species of Helochares have hitherto been recorded from Europe or the eastern Mediterranean: viz., H. lividus (Forster), H. obscurus (Müller), H. punctatus Sharp, H. livornicus Kuwert, H. sharpi (Kuwert), H. mentinotus Kuwert, H. longipalpis (Murray). H. pallens (MacLeay), and H. minwissimus Kuwert. A key to these species is given, and the male genitalia of H. lividoides sp.n. and H. lividus are figured. H. (s.str.) nigritulus Kuwert and H. (Hydrobaticus) melanophthalmus (Mulsant), both previously mentioned from Europe, are briefly discussed, and not considered elements of the European fauna.
