Abstract

The 25 Spilosoma-like species (including 2 pest species) found in the Afrotropical region are reviewed, and reclassified as species of Alpenus Walker gen. rev., Paralpenus gen. n. and Micralarctia gen . n. and their tribal affinities discussed. Four new species of Alpenus (whalleyi, wichgrafi, thomasi, auriculatus) are described, together with two new species of Micralarctia (toulgoeti, australis). Fourteen new synonymies and 25 new comhinations of species group and generic names are established. Four names are changed in status from specific to subspecific rank and one name from suhspecific to specific rank. Alpenus Walker and A. nigropunctatus (Bethune-Baker) are removed from synonymy. One neotype and 19 lectotypes are designated. Keys to species and subspecies are provided. Spilosoma mombasana (Rothschild), described from Kenya, is synonymized with the Nearctic Estigmene acrea (Drury).
