Polistine wasps of the subgenera Stenopolistes and Megapolistes from the Philippine, Moluccan and Bismarck Islands (Hymenoptera: Vespidae)

Nine species and nine subspecies are treated. New species and subspecies of Polistes (Stenopolistes) described are: buruensis, williamsi, simulatus obiensis, simulatus halmaheirensis, simulatus morotaiensis, asterope narupi and asterope arvidi. New subspecies of Polistes (Megapolistes) described are: tepidus manusensis, tepidus theodori, arthuri vechti, penthicus ater. Lectotypes are designated for Polistes simulatus Smith, 1861, P. arthuri Cameron, 1901 and P. novaepomeraniae Schulz, 1905. Polistes colonicus Smith, 1861 is a new synonym of Polistes lateritius Smith, 1857. The three subspecies of P. (Stenopolistes) asterope in the Bismarck Islands form an evolutionary lineage presumably reflecting time of isolation.
