Abstract

After one year of collecting, the number of known Collembola species from the Canary Islands was increased from 41 to about 220. Identification keys to the Canarian families and genera are given. Keys, taxonomical notes and details of distribution and ecology are given for 29 species of the family Hypogastruridae. The following new species are described: Xenylla hexagona sp. n., X. gomerensis sp. n., X. laurisilvae sp. n., Xenyllogastrura arenaria sp. n., X. reducta sp. n., Acheroxenylla canariensis sp. n., A. furcata sp. n., Acherongia huetheri sp. n.
