Abstract

Anthrax pandora Fabricius, the type species of the genus Exoprosopa Macquart, was described from Algeria but the species has seldom been recognised by subsequent authors. Comparison of specimens from Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco with photographs of the badly damaged syntypes showed that Exoprosopa baccha Loew syn. n. is a synonym and establishes the distribution of E. pandora as North Africa, the Levant and southern Balkans. A key is provided for the identification of E. pandora and similar species from Europe and the Mediterranean Basin (viz., E. bowdeni Sanchez-Terrón, E. capucina (Fabricius), E. cleomene Egger, E. italica (Rossi), E. jacchus (Fabricius)) and their distributions are clarified.
